On a Love Years Lost

by Pirate Shy
September 27, 2005

Three years have passed since the mutiny, and Jack still can't quite believe it.

Captain Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl. The pirate and the dark lady. Captain Sparrow's Pearl. Ol' Jack and his barnacled sweetheart. Jack. Pearl. Inseparable. A ship needs a captain, and what is a captain without a ship? Unthinkable that there could be such a severing.

He still forgets, sometimes, when he wakes in the mornings on this ship. (The name isn't important; she's just ship, she's not his ship.) He chose her because she moves like the lost one. When he wakes he is deceived into thinking that he is back on the Pearl before the mutiny, there's still time to prevent it, he doesn't have to lose her after all, or even that it is the first morning aboard her and he has the chance to to choose better men for his crew.

Then he'll realise he's surrounded by pale wood not dark and remember that she is three years gone. Three years; isn't that a long enough exile?

He would not have thought that one could survive without the other. He still lives, which only makes him worry more for her. Timbers and canvas are as mortal in their way as flesh and bone ... and even if she has evaded fire and rocks, after years captained by Barbossa, when Jack gets her back (he will, he will), she won't be the same ship.
