~ One
Shot ~
~One Shot~
He pleaded and cajoled and tried to appease them, with the shamelessness
of desperation, but they just laughed in his face; and Bo'sun
cuffed him, hard, in the back of the head. "Enough o' your
lip, Sparrow."
They tossed the pistol contemptuously at his feet.
"One shot," sniggered Pintel. "Cap'n's
orders."
He stood silent finally, head spinning, on the beach. The boat
went away slowly, avoiding the shoals. Beyond the breakers, black
sails unfurled, and the Pearl turned to the open sea. In
his bones he felt her move, as if he were still at the helm and
she under his hands, dancing together between wind and sea...
He watched her recede from him until she was a toy ship, and
then a black speck among the swells, and then lost to the horizon.
She was really gone.
He sat down heavily on the sand. Picked up the pistol, stared
at it bleakly; rested the barrel against his temple, a cold kiss
of metal on his skin. Closed his eyes, and saw Barbossa's face.

"One shot, lad, 'tis all you'll be needin'."
"I thought we were mates!"
"Jack. Jack...." His first mate shook his head with
mock regret. "Haven't I taught ye anything? We're pirates,
lad! Though you're a right sorry excuse for one." A shark's
grin. "Oh, an' thank ye kindly for them bearings, Jack. Must
say I never thought ye'd give 'em up so easy...."
~~
He lowered the pistol.
"One shot," he said softly. "Aye, that'll be enough."

"Haven't You Heard the Stories?"
Yes, of course, Im wearing white for my wedding,
should I not?
Begging your pardon, Miss, its not my place, but
there is talk.
What kind of--talk? About me?
You andthat pirate, Miss. Found you together
on the island, they did; sorry it wouldnt work between you,
he was.
Nothing happened, I assure you.
Oh, Im sure not, Miss, just gossip Im hearing
is all.
Estrella
..
Yes, Miss?
Pass on some gossip you heard from me, will you?
Yes, Miss. Are you angry, Miss?
Not half as angry as Captain Eunuch will be,
when he hears the stories.

Bill Turner folded a tattered piece of cloth over the coin in
his palm. He could still see Jack standing on the island, shaking
his fist at the Pearl as the distance stretched between
them. Good friend, Jack. Hadnt deserved what theyd
done to him. Resisting the cursed golds call, he dropped
the cloth-wrapped piece into a wooden box meant for his son. He
meant to do right by Jack, even if the crazy pirate wasnt
around to hear tell of it. Never mind that hed be caught
in it too. It wasnt vengeance, he told himself. It was justice.

He had to admit that it was not exactly right of him to feel
this way about any man, even one so piratical as Sparrow. But
it was not every man who had the gall to handle Elizabeth as he
so blatantly had, first at the dock and now after the island they
had been marooned on. He quelled the anger running through his
veins. But
he could not quell the small sense of revenge.
" . . . You will then spend the rest of the voyage contemplating
all possible meanings of the phrase `silent as the grave.' Do
I make myself clear?"

~ Responsibility
~
From the personal log of Hector
Barbossa
It's thanks to Elizabeth I'm still around; she should know that.
The wench must'a thrown little Jack overboard when she helped
those bloody pirates steal my ship. He swam to the island, t'was
the only land around. And just like I'd trained him; when he saw
me there, and the gold, he brought it to me. One cursed coin at
a time. On me, beside me, each touching me or its mate, til the
chest was empty. Then I woke up, and was like before.
I've found the bodies of me crew who fell overboard during the
battle. Didn't work for them. Who knows the ways of the heathen
gods?
But me, I'm back, oh yes. Tis a long walk to Port Royal. Gives
me time to make plans for Elizabeth and the whelp. Haven't decided
yet, which I'll let watch the other die. But I'll make certain
they both know Elizabeth is responsible for my being there. That's
important to me.

~ His
Heart ~
The sound of the ship's bell split the night, causing his heart
to go cold; the sudden cessation of the toll, seconds later, stopped
it beating altogether.
"Make for the ship!" he screamed. "Move!"
He wasn't prepared for what awaited him as he topped the boarding
rope, for the deck of the Dauntless awash with the blood
of his men. Men slaughtered because he had refused to trust the
word of a pirate, even one that he knew in his heart to be a good
man.
He would pay retribution with every beat of that pride-betrayed
heart until the day that it beat no more.
Perhaps longer.
