From the personal log of Lieutenant Andrew Gillette, Port Royal

Astonishing how much easier it is to gain pardon for great crime than small.

A dissolute brigand wreaks havoc for decades on all manner of persons and properties; and scandalous pamphlets circulate extolling his low cunning and daring escapes.

A naive apprentice's impulsive theft of valuable Royal Navy property results in its total destruction; he receives clemency and is welcomed to the bosom of the most exalted (such as it is) family of the island.

One untoward quip about a mermaid, and you can never live it down.
