~ Broken ~

She haunts his memory, floating like a broken doll amidst the flames and wreckage of the pirate attack. The water carrying away the parasol she was so proud of is red with her own blood. He had dived into the sea to save her, knowing she could not swim—not knowing it was already too late. That dive had saved his life.

Now another beautiful young girl stands before him twirling her parasol. Her brown eyes sparkle. "Please, Will. Teach me to shoot," Elizabeth coaxes.

Slowly he hands her the rifle. He knows that girls, treated like dolls, break like them.

~ Jack and the Compass ~

"Jack! What d'ye mean trading our rum money for a broken compass?"

"I didn't trade it. I won it at cards." Jack sounded petulant.

"Then where's the rum money?" Ball asked almost patiently.

"Lost it at cards."

"So why didn't you win money back instead of this?" Bill started to pitch the compass overboard when Jack knocked him to the ground to save it.

"S'not useless, mate. S'magic. Gonna lead us to gold like you've never seen before. Make the rum money look like spare change, it will."

"Magic? Jack, you drank all the rum by yourself again, didn't you?"

~ Broken Optimism ~

Captain Jack Sparrow had always had faith in his two favorite Ladies, his Luck and his Pearl; and both had failed him on the same night.

If the Pearl's cannons had hit the wall a few inches over, he'd be the one scrambling free. Not only was he now the only prisoner left, he could see his darling Pearl sailing away without him. Again. He searched the scene of wreckage outside for something, anything to cheer him. And he found it.

"Look, look!" He danced in glee. "She broke the scaffold!"

~ Unbroken ~

He forged the links over the years - one day, one link - shaped in the heat of his anger, tempered in the ice of his determination, stowed in his otherwise empty heart. Three thousand five hundred and fifty six links bind them so that she will not be lost, for they are heart and soul, one to the other and he will not loose the tether until he has broken the man who stole her from him. Then he and his dark lady will chase the horizon, his heart full of her song once again.

~ Game of Chance ~

"Let's play one more hand. Your luck's about to change, mate, 'm sure of it."

The mark's eyes lit up, "You think so?" But the light went out abruptly as he delved into his pockets.

"Damnation! Fortune's about to smile and I can't take advantage. I've nothing left but my grandfather's compass, God rest his soul, and the poxy thing's worthless. It's broken, see?" He lifted the domed lid to reveal the needle moving in a desultory fashion, finally coming to rest in a direction that was definitely not north.

Jack had been playing and waiting - and cheating - all evening to maneuver his opponent into this action. He put on his best grin (which was very good indeed) and tried to sound bored but magnanimous.

"Tell you what. I'll let you put up your grandda's worthless compass and give you a chance at winnin' back some coin. And when you do, you can buy me a drink."

The younger man smiled, nodding vigorously, and began shuffling the cards.

~ Broken ~

“I feel…”.

Not pain, no, in spite of that welling blood.

But, for one blessed moment, bright, full-blown sensation.

Uneven rock beneath his boots.

His clothing: an enveloping, sliding, catching resonance.

The embrace of his mutilated hat.

The heavy heat of sword and pistol.

Air: humid, and chill, and… ah, God, the sea!

And fainter scents: gold. And burnt powder.

The weight of eyes: behind him, eager as young crows’; before him, beautiful and hated, and dark with portent and…was it pity?

His guts twisting… but fading, now.

Everything fading, dreamlike, leaving nothing in it’s wake. Nothing except…

“…cold.”
